A recently popular discussion has been on texting and other informal communications and their effect.

Numerous studies are linking errors in academic writing to these means of communication. Informal writing has seeped into Missouri State, but is it really an issue?

Lanette Cadle, an assistant professor in English, said in her time at Missouri State, she has seen a lot of errors, but the level of errors has not been especially high lately.

In college sports, athletes can transfer from team to team. That is just the way things are.

In professional sports, they can be traded around. But in college sports, the athletes themselves have the power over where they go.

Usually college athletes go from larger schools to smaller ones either because they don't like the size or they don't like the competition of the higher divisions.

4.5 out of 5 stars

As all us adamant fans have waited patiently the past 11 years since their last self-titled release. "Third", the appropriately titled third installment from Portishead, is finally here. Some fans may have shrugged off the stylish entrepreneurs of the pivotal Bristol trip-hop that permeated through the music scene of the '90s after such an extensive hiatus, which, consequentially, may have worn some luster off their older hits from their debut album, "Dummy.

Tips for studying

The week before finals has arrived, and Ashley Baugus has not even started studying.

"Usually, I wait until too late, like the day before," Baugus, a freshman general business major, said. "I then freak out because I know I should have studied earlier."

Final exams are nearing the horizon and many students like Baugus are unprepared.

Views on China and Tibet

A popular phrase among foreigners in China goes, "Stay away from the three T's: Tiananmen, Taiwan and Tibet" - at least if you're looking to stay out of trouble. Bring up one, and you're likely to get a heated response or no response at all or make a poor Chinese girl cry.

Design for a dream country

I like to think about the birth of our nation. I'm no stereotypical patriot, don't get me wrong, but I do have a great sense of national pride. It's just that it's mostly concerning our past, not so much the present. Not lately, at least.

But the fact is, in 1776, a bunch of rich, brilliant men sparked an insurgency of ideas, based on French philosophy and an enormous sense of entitlement (revolution is only armed egoism, after all) and founded a nation on the idle hopes and daydreams they all shared.

Letter: Birth control price increase too extreme

If you think tuition and gas prices are on the rise, let's talk about the price of birth control! Here at Missouri State, birth control prices went from just more than $10 a month to more than $50 a month - a 500 percent increase! This means many college students must decide how, or whether, we can afford contraception.

Again, "Brother" Jed Smock and his posse have come and gone. As usual, many believers in Christ are exclaiming that this group of lunatics does not represent true Christianity. I would ask "Who does?" Surely you must know if you know that Jed doesn't fit the bill.

Stay-at-home moms deserve equal celebration

Today's modern women are raised on independence and self-sufficiency. American society and beauty magazines teach young girls that a real woman is sexually liberated, equal in all ways to a man, and finds complete fulfillment in self-reliance. These messages fuel a common belief that stay-at-home mothers are less respectable than career women.
