'Duck Duck Goose' wins at Moxie

A Missouri State University alumnus filmmaker won all the categories at the Moxie during the second annual Moxie Shorts short film contest. Nathan Springer, the winning Missouri State alumnus, said he decided to create a film titled "Duck Duck Goose". Work on "Duck Duck Goose" started early this year with the help of Rachel Skidmore, a senior electronic arts and video production major, and Brandon Klaus, an alumnus, as an independent study for a class.

Winterfest to host 36 craft exhibits

The 13th annual Winterfest weekend begins today at Juanita K. Hammons Hall for the Performing Arts and ends Dec. 2. Missouri State is expecting 36 exhibitors at Hammons Hall this year. Adela Generally, coordinator for the event, said the event has a festive atmosphere.

Military entertainment showcase

All this week, the Special Collections and Archives Department in Meyer Library has been showcasing items from past endeavors in entertaining the nation's troops stationed overseas. In the past, the school's Theatre and Dance Department has worked alongside the United Services Organization (USO) to entertain troops in tours overseas, said Shannon Western, who works in the Special Collections and Archives Department.

Study of Arabic, Chinese on the rise since 2006

The number of students studying Arabic and Chinese at two- and four-year institutions in the United States has jumped 126.5 percent and 51.0 percent, respectively, according to a November report released by the Modern Language Association. The report, which is based on the fall 2006 enrollment data from 2,795 American colleges and universities, documents student enrollment in the 12 leading languages taught in the United States.

Fault line poses little threat to Springfield

The New Madrid fault line runs from Memphis, Tenn. to St. Louis, Mo. It covers five states: Illinois, Kentucky, Missouri, Arkansas and Tennessee. About 200 years ago, on Feb. 7, 1812, the largest earthquake in the contiguous United States occurred on this fault line.

Rock Band rocks gaming world

Rock Band, a music video game, was released last week and is already becoming a success in the gaming world. Developed by Harmonix, the developer behind the first two Guitar Heroes, Rock Band allows gamers to play out several different aspects of a typical rock band, like lead singer, guitarist, bassist and drummer.
