MSU addresses budget issues

Many who attended the joint Faculty and Staff Senates' meeting on Thursday weren't surprised by President Michael Nietzel's announcement that the operating budget for the next fiscal year would be cautious and conservative. "I wasn't surprised by anything (Thursday)," said James Philpot, an assistant professor in the finance department and a faculty senator.

Event carries out MSU mission

The fifth-annual Public Affairs Conference is being held this week with sessions taking place in the Plaster Student Union, with the keynote addressed in Juanita K. Hammons Performing Arts Center. According to the Missouri State Web site, "the conference features a series of keynote presentations, panel discussions and special events throughout the week, which touch upon business, family, international issues, the arts and education.

What's up with the CJB?

The Campus Judicial Board has many duties recognized under Student Government Association, including validation of election results and circumstances. The SGA Elections Commission is composed of the elections commissioner and at least two other non-SGA and non-CJB members who are appointed by the commissioner, said Chief Elections Commissioner Jeff Faust, who also works as a sports reporter for The Standard.

Mother still detained in China for her beliefs

International student Jin Pang did not spend her spring break tanning on a beach or visiting family like many Missouri State University students. Pang, a business administration graduate student, instead spent it crusading across the state requesting the help of senators and representatives to free her mother who was detained by the Chinese government in July 2008 for practicing Falun Gong, a meditation-based religion frowned upon by those in power.
