After scoring one goal in their last two games against Nebraska and St. Louis, the Missouri State women's soccer team rebounded on Tuesday by scoring four goals against Murray State to win 4-0.
"Our attack was relentless from start to finish, and we were very pleased that we could impose our will the whole game. We never got out-played today," head coach Rob Brewer said.
Missouri State took 14 shots in the match, while Murray State took four shots.
The Lady Bears shot 10 of those 14 on goal. Murray State had one shot on goal.
"I think they took care of business the whole game; there was no let down. We played both halves very fast. It was a sign of maturity that we didn't let down after the goals," Brewer said.
The first goal of the game came after 39 minutes of play when sophomore forward Nicole Logan headed the ball in on a corner kick by freshman midfielder Jessica Depew. Depew and Logan were both first half substitutions.
"Everyone came in and did their job. Every person who traveled played, and the level of play never dropped," assistant coach Chip Dutchik said.
The Bears scored one goal in the first half, but Brewer said it could have easily been two.
"We actually scored a goal in the first 2 minutes that got called back for outsides," Brewer said.
The second half started with Missouri State threatening. A Murray State hand-ball temporarily saved a goal, but sophomore midfielder Samantha Aguilar scored on the ensuing penalty kick.
"We came out the second half and were really taking it at them. We really had our way with them, and we got to play 21 players," Brewer said.
Freshman defender Sarah Linsin scored the third goal for Missouri State 23 minutes in the second half, unassisted, from 40 yards out.
With only three minutes left, freshman midfielder Christine Cross passed to sophomore defender Jenna Dobkins for the fourth and final goal.
"We scored with 4 different players and with four different types of goals," Brewer said.
Missouri State scored six goals in their first five games. Their four goals against Murray State was clearly their best offensive performance of the season, and Aguilar said it started with a warm-up that left the team feeling good.
"I know during warm ups everyone was hitting good shots. We were getting good crosses. We had a really good warm-up," Aguilar said.
Missouri State's win im-proved their record to 4-2, and it prevented a three-game losing streak.
"I think we just came out ready to play; coming off 2 losses we came in needing a win," Aguilar said.
The boost to the offense could help them as they get set to play their second Big 12 opponent of the season, Kansas. Missouri State will play in Lawrence, Kan. at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
