Today, Students in Free Enterprise are hosting a free seminar, Financial Manage-ment 101.

SIFE is a student run organization that creates projects around five criteria: entrepreneurship, financial literacy, success skills, market economics and ethics.

"Students in SIFE get benefits by practicing concepts they learn in class before they get out into the real world," said Laura Zirfas, SIFE graduate assistant and MBA major. "It's a real-life situation that students can't be penalized for."

At the end of each year, The students in SIFE take their projects to a competition where they are judged on how well they applied the concepts they learned. They are judged by business CEOs and participate in a career fair.

There are some students who have received job offers just off of their presentations, according to Zirfas.

SIFE's first project is the Financial Management 101 seminar where Tracey Blaue from the Consumer Credit Counseling Service will be speaking.

"The seminar will talk about credit cards and what to do if you find yourself in debt," Zirfas said.

College students are bombarded with credit card offers. According to an article from the Sept. 10 Business Week, 75 percent of college students sign up for credit cards and their debt grows by 32 percent each year.

"I signed up for a credit card and to get a little two dollar radio, but they actually signed me up for two cards," Zirfas said.

"It took me an hour of talking to (the credit card company) to get them to cancel me and even though I got letters confirming cancellation, I found out later that they actually didn't cancel me."

The seminar also will discuss budgeting, solutions for a debt free future and what to look for in a credit score.

The seminar will be held in Glass 101 on Tuesday, Sept. 18, from 5 p.m. to 6:15 p.m.
