The Missouri State women's cross country team opened their new facility with a win last weekend, finishing first in the Missouri State Classic.

The team claimed four of the top five places in the meet, which consisted of a 5 kilometer run. The Lady Bears totaled 20 points in the 5K run. The second place team, Drake, finished with 50 points, and Missouri-Kansas City finished in third with 87 points.

"We are excited to open up our new facility with a win," said head coach Greg Hipp. "The girl's ran tough."

Missouri State senior Carrie Vestal finished first for the Lady Bears with a time of 18:29. Vestal has finished first in both of the team's meets this season.

"It felt good to come in first, especially at our home meet," Vestal said. "Having all those fans to cheer me on helped."

Vestal beat Nicole Brau-nsdorf from Drake by three seconds. All together there were 47 runners from six different schools at the invitational.

"I was slightly concerned about the Drake girl," Vestal said. "I wasn't about to let a conference runner pass me without a fight."

Jamie Vest, a junior cross-country runner, finished in third with a time of 18:50. She finished second in their last meet. Kristin Wolkey and Nancy Nieto finished in fourth and fifth.

"We have a really strong team this year," Vest said. "We have a good mix of girls, with a strong freshmen class who are looking to contribute over the next four years."

This is the second meet of the season for the cross-country team and they have finished first in both. In their first meet, the team won by 36 points and this weekend they won by 30.

"The girls have been running as much as 85 miles per week, which has left us a little, waxed but the work will pay off in the end," Hipp said. "We will start to adjust training in a few weeks to allow for more rest so we are better prepared to race at our best."

Missouri State is preparing for the Missouri Valley Confer-ence Championship, which will be held on Oct. 27. The Lady Bears have two meets before then. Even though the conference championship meet is a month away, Missouri State is eager to play in their conference.

"We are taking it one meet at a time and just trying to go out and compete, but a major goal for us is the MVC (cross country) championship," Vestal said.
