October is breast cancer awareness month and many organizations on and off campus have planned events to recognize and raise money for the cause.
The staff senate will be sponsoring a breast cancer awareness week for the university starting Sunday, with a variety of events throughout the week to lead up to the group's main event, Lee's National Denim Day. They already sponsored a 5K run on Sept. 23 that raised more than $2,000 for breast cancer awareness.
Staff Senate will be collecting donations on Denim Day of $5 or more for professors and faculty to wear jeans to work on Oct. 5. President Michael Nietzel will also participate, wearing a pair of his denim jeans, and will recognize any department with 100 percent participation.
"Lee National Denim Day is extremely important to our employees, as many of them have been personally touched by the disease," Cathy McFall, staff senate Denim Day chair, said. "We at present know of 18 survivors currently employed by the university."
Relay for Life is another university organization that will recognize breast cancer this month by selling T-shirts dawning the slogan, "save the ta-tas." All proceeds from T-shirt sales will be used to put on the Relay for Life event held later on this year.
Although breast cancer awareness month doesn't begin until October, the organization started selling the T-shirts last week during Public Affairs Week and already sold out. More T-shirts will be available by the end of the week.
Local Springfield businesses are also recognizing the month with different promotions.
Springfield hair salon A Valeria Boss Salon is doing its part for breast cancer awareness month by making Tuesdays special, starting Wednesday through the end of the month.
On "Ta-ta Tuesdays," as the salon calls it, customers can come in and dye a pink stripe in their hair or get a pink hair extension for a $10 donation toward breast cancer research. Stylists' tips and retail sales will also be donated.
Valeria Boss, owner of AVBS, said the salon is really excited about getting an opportunity to reach out to the community.
"We have a lot of clients that have fought the battle," she said. "It's a chance for us to get involved and give back."
AVBS will also be partnering with Tonic Lounge and their promotion to "Drink Pink." Participants of AVBS's "Ta-ta Tuesdays" will get into Tonic with no cover charge. There will even be dates the stylists will be bringing their pink streaking to the club, but those are yet to be determined.
For more information about buying or selling "save the ta-tas" T-shirts, please contact Aly Mays, Cybil Paris or Mallory Stowe, event chairs.
