"I'm very proud of my team," said Missouri State head coach Dawn Porter. "They played with a lot of heart and intensity."
Against Kent State on Saturday, Missouri State got on the board first with a goal from Melissa Lantz, who was assisted by Alyssa Hile.
Kent State answered on a penalty corner with a goal by Charlotte Muller.
"They got a cheap call that gave them a corner which got them to overtime," said Missouri State goalkeeeper Kim Kinsella, who had 23 saves.
The game moved into overtime and then into double overtime with no score change. Then, in the 85th minute, Rachel Miller scored the winning goal for Kent State.
"We were able to play with a full 70 minutes plus some more with that same intensity," Porter said. "That was something we weren't able to do before."
On Sunday, the field hockey team played Ohio, who is ranked 11th in the nation. This game went into double overtime as a scoreless match. Ohio's Rachelle Coetzee scored the game winner in the 90th minute.
"We held the No. 11 team to 1-0 and kept it scoreless into double overtime," said Kinsella, who had 16 saves in the match. "I couldn't be prouder of my team's performance this weekend."
The loss drops the team's record to 1-11 and their conference record to 0-2. "The losses still hurt, but it is different when you know you did everything you could," Kinsella said.
Missouri State gave up a total of three goals over the weekend despite being out-shot by a combined margin of 60-14.
"We were able to stop the key players," Porter said. "It is always nice to see your team play that well at that high of a level."
Conference play continues as Missouri State travels to Indiana to play Ball State on Saturday, and then heads to Ohio to play Miami (Ohio) University on Sunday.
