The Missouri State volleyball team finished off the first half of their Missouri Valley Conference schedule in style.
The Bears (19-3 overall, 8-1 in conference) went on the road to take on Drake and Creighton and ended up coming back with two wins, while taking over first place in the Valley.
In Saturday night's sweep of Creighton 30-22, 31-29, 31-29, head coach Melissa Stokes picked up her 150th career conference win, ranking her third all-time among active coaches. Missouri State has now beaten Creighton 19 straight times and 25 of the 28 all-time meetings.
"It was a tough fought, intense match," assistant head coach Jeni Jones said. "It was two good teams playing volleyball at a high level."
After being sidelined from play for almost a week with an ankle sprain, senior Katelyn Panzau came back strong with 50 assists (16.67 per game, or almost five above her average) and 11 digs, just for good measure. It was Panzau's fifth double-double of the season.
Leading the attack against Creighton (13-7, 7-2) was sophomore Sara Staubach who had 23 kills on .370 hitting percentage. She became the first player since 2000 to record 20 kills in a three set match. Missouri State is now 9-0 when Staubach has 12 or more kills.
Senior Jamie Adams added 17 kills, while junior Terri Del Conte led the defense with 18 digs.
Even though Drake is in the lower half of the Valley (5-13, 2-5), they are a difficult task for anyone trying to play at the Knapp Center. At home, Drake has taken teams like Creighton and Illinois State to five games and Northern Iowa to four, however in losing efforts.
This weekend was no different as MSU beat Drake in four, 30-22, 29-31, 30-23, 30-25. Missouri State is now 41-8 all-time against the Bulldogs.
Against Drake, junior Ashley Kell, filling in for the formerly injured Panzau, had 54 assists and 12 digs for her first career double-double.
Kell's offense was lead by Adams who had 17 kills, while freshman Shayla Patrick had 14 kills on .500 hitting.
Last week's MVC defensive player of the week, Sara Thomas had another good weekend, putting up 21 kills, seven blocks, and 33 digs.
According to Jones, MSU needed to have good ball control to help the attack, which starts with a good serve receive. They also needed to stay aggressive with their serving to keep the other team on edge.
The Lady Bears kept the receive errors to a minimum (five in seven games) but were hit-or-miss in serving. The team had 12 aces (Del Conte with four) and 14 service errors (seven in each match). Luckily with 16 errors to only five aces from Creighton and Drake, the damage wasn't as noticeable.
Even though students will be on fall break, the Lady Bears will be at home this weekend to take on Illinois State on Friday and Indiana State on Saturday. Both games are at 7 p.m.
