Valley title race takes a backseat

A breast cancer fundraiser is the new focus of tonight's pivotal women's soccer match between Missouri State and Illinois State thanks to an idea a Missouri State player came up with.

Missouri State could clinch a first round bye in the Missouri Valley conference tournament with a win over Illinois State, currently first place in the valley, and a win over Indiana State, currently last in the Valley, on Sunday.

But sophomore forward Nicole Logan said finding a cure for breast cancer and raising awareness of the disease were more important.

"A woman dies every 13 minutes from breast cancer," Logan said. "My aunt had breast cancer when I was younger, and I remember the whole process. She's been cured for exactly 10 years this month, and that really inspired me to do this. She beat it, and I think it would be good if more girls were knowledgeable about the subject."

Head coach Rob Brewer said he was impressed with Logan's selflessness and determination.

"We have a student athlete who is trying to do something for someone else," Brewer said. "I could tell it was important to her."

The event is called Passionately Pink for the Cure, and the team is encouraging those who attend to wear pink in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month and to make a donation of $5 or more.

Logan said donations can be made online at komen.org, then clicking on "donations," "do-nate to Passionately Pink," "donate to a team" and searching "Missouri State women's soccer". Logan is the team captain for the fundraiser.

The official website for the team donations is http://www.-komendonations.org/site/TR/Events/KomenTR?team_id=77890&pg=team&fr_id=1040. Those that donate will receiver a free pin at the game Friday night.

"We want to get as many people out as possible," Logan said. "We thought it would be a really fun thing to do, and it would be really cool to see as many people as possible wearing pink. Our goal, starting out, was $350 and we've already surpassed that. Our new goal is to raise $1,200."
