Dan Lepper has put away the lion suit. It's back to the real world with more clothes and less fur. At least he has the crown to keep him warm.
Lepper said the lion suit played a key role in his campaigning. He wore it practically everyday for a month. Lepper said people began to know him as the guy in the lion suit.
He said the idea just popped into his head at one of his initial campaign meeting. "Danimal the animal never really was a nickname I went by, but as I got to thinking, I already had a bunch of animal costumes to go with it and it went with my slogan, 'I just can't wait to be King.'"
He did not wear his lion suit to the parade or game on Saturday; instead he wore a suit and tie. He watched the game with the rest of the fans and candidates, but spent much of half time alone under the bleachers hanging out, staying cool, and thinking about his experience.
Lepper described his relief hearing his name announced as King. "It's like the first breath a swimmer takes coming out of the water. It's just a huge relief." He then heard the crowd erupt and the support from his fellow fraternity members and RAs. He said he didn't know what to do for a second.
Lepper ran under the social fraternity, Theta Chi. The immense gratitude he has for his brothers' support is only rivaled by the gratitude he has for the other organizations that supported him. "Theta Chi won, not just me. I couldn't have done it without my brothers" said Lepper.
Following the ceremony, Lepper said he took "about a million pictures" with family and friends. He then got ready for the Homecoming Dance Theta Chi put on that night. He and his date had a traditional high school formal night by going to Applebee's for dinner and then dancing the night away at Remingtons.
Lepper has his 50 hours of community service in front of him now. He hopes to use his hours to organize a multi-campus food drive but that is only a plan. He wants to look into collaborating with the Homecoming Queen to see if they can collaborate.
His final hopes are that he can represent all the organizations on campus, no matter how prestigious or not. But more than anything, Lepper is thankful for the experience. He said running for Homecoming King is something he has wanted to do for years now and it has finally all fallen together perfectly, lion suit and all.
