Letter: F-word fight was not for freedom of speech
Issue date: 11/2/07 Section: Opinion

The real issue here, regarding the big "f" word, really isn't about freedom of speech. It's about respect. Do you (regardless of age) really, honestly, freely use that word in your Mom or Dad's presence? Could you? Sadly, there are some who come from homes where the air is frequently painted blue. Ever wish it wasn't that way?
Dudes! Are you really bigger and badder when you use the big "f" word? Or are you just trying to fit in. Ladies - do you really feel good about yourselves when you use it? Or do you just want to be accepted. When the group met at the Bear Paw last Friday, holding sign, did you really want to be there? You might be amazed at the repertoire of adjectives you possess, as opposed to the "adjective of choice." As the Great…uh…Whatshisname said, "To Thine own Self be True."
I wasn't going to send this article, but when I saw it referenced again in Tuesday's edition of The Standard, I thought I would. We're whipping a dead horse, guys. Let it go.

I'm not even sure if I understand your argument. The protest wasn't about freedom of speech because (you think) that people don't say the F-word in front of their parents? I think many, many people freely use the word in their parent's presence. (Continued…)

Thank you Kevin, that was awesome and exactly what I was thinking.
There is no substance to her letter at all and the points are hardly valid.
