Delta Zeta, User Pick claim Legacy Cup

Issue date: 11/2/07 Section: Sports
The flag football champions of the women's and men's top leagues competed for the right to say they are Missouri State's best Tuesday night at the Legacy Cup.

The women's Top Gun league saw one Greek team in Delta Zeta and one non-Greek team in That's All She Needed, with Delta Zeta ultimately winning 14-12.

Delta Zeta seemed to get off to the better early stop, putting a halt to That's All She Needed for the first few plays until sophomore Reaghan Albert, quarterback, ran for 40 yards to get a first down.

That was almost the first touchdown of the game but sophomore Ronda Ramsey threw an interception to sophomore Delta Zeta player Sumer Thomas.

"We knew that the DZ's were fast, Ramsey said. "We were taking way to long to get the ball out,"

"Hike, throw, we didn't need to hold onto it like we did."

With less than 10 minutes off the clock, Delta Zeta scored their first touchdown and grabbed the lead.

Both teams utilized reverse plays, sometimes even three reverses, which could result in long yardage if the runner got through the first set of defenders.

Ramsey turned from runner to receiver as Albert threw a long ball into the end zone to find a diving Ramsey for the almost-equalizer.

With less than six minutes left in the first half, Delta Zeta had an injury timeout. Junior Delta Zeta player, Stephanie Paul, was forced to visit the sideline.

The referee told her that she was going to eventually need stitches, to which she replied, "That's great, but can it wait 30 minutes?"

Ramsey felt that they had control of the first half. "The first half we were on the ball," Ramsey said. "We were communicating and we almost had another touchdown. It was all about communication."

That communication paid off in the second half as That's All She Needed went to take the lead with an Albert throw to a tightly covered sophomore, Carly McGrane.

"We had to be crisp," Ramsey said. "In the types of plays we were running, you had to be on it. Make a move, make it happen. Make a move, make it count."
