The Campus Coalition for our Environment will be holding its first event today from noon to 10 p.m. at the Bear Paw.
"ECOPalooza is a concert and sustainability fair that is seeking to combine entertainment, education and awareness to get the community involved and invested in efforts for a sustainable future," said Lindsey Berger, C.C.O.E. member and president of Students for a Sustainable Future.
ECOPalooza is an all-day event that will feature live bands, theatrical performances and educational speakers, Berger, a senior majoring in education, said.
Springfield-based reggae band Jah Roots will headline the event with a performance at 9 p.m. Popular hip hop artist Tech N9ne, who will be performing at Remington's tonight, will also be making a guest appearance, Berger said.
More than 10 local talents such as Stark Raving Clam, the Skinny Improv and Lyal Strickland will also be showcased in the fair.
"I think it's really important that we figure out how to live responsibly in regards to the environment," Strickland, a senior majoring in digital film production, said. "It should be an issue close to heart with anyone from the Ozarks."
The festival is also encouraging participants to bring recyclable items with them today. In exchange for these items, recyclers will be entered into a raffle.
A variety of electronic items such as video and DVD players, remotes and batteries will be accepted by the Computer Recycling Center. Other items including Styrofoam, glass and paper will also be taken.
Domino's and Chipotle will be providing food to festival goers, and a variety of businesses, such as Mama Jean's, the Discovery Center and Toyota, will have booths set up throughout the day.
"Toyota will be bringing three Hybrid vehicles to the event," Berger said. "With a valid driver's license and proof of insurance, attendees will be able to test drive a Prius, Camry or SUV."
C.C.O.E., a collaboration of 20/20 Vision, the Sierra Club and Students for a Sustainable Future, is a new student organization that was founded this year. The group focuses on educating the community on sustainability and encouraging the use of sustainable practices in everyday life.
