Wichita State too much for MSU again

After their Missouri Valley Conference match against No. 25 Wichita State, there are a few things Missouri State volleyball can take away from it, good and bad.

The best news of all is the fact that the Bears (23-4, 12-2 MVC) can play with the Shockers. There is no doubt about it now. Earlier in the season, after losing the first two games, Missouri State played catch up before falling in four games.

But during this match, the Bears went ahead two games to one and were up 9-6 in the deciding fifth game, before finally dropping to the Shockers, 30-19, 26-30, 24-30, 30-25, 15-10.

With the MVC tournament at Hammons Student Center this year, during Thanksg-iving weekend, Missouri State will hopefully have the home court advantage to take down the Shockers (22-4, 13-1).

The bad news is the fact that the wear and tear of the season is getting to the Bears.

The main concern right now is the health of sophomore Sara Staubach. Stau-bach, who just last week against Southern Illinois according to Stokes, "put the team on her back and said 'follow me,'" is having an issue with her leg.

The outside hitter had a hard time last Friday. She had eight kills on the match but on 59 swings, which ended up being minus 0.85 hitting percentage.

Sophomore Addie Foley, who was first pronounced out for the week, came in to try to help spark the offense. Foley only saw a little time in one game, being unsuccessful in just two attacks.

The other good news, though, is the play of the Missouri State seniors.

After pronouncing herself at 100 percent healthy again - one of the few members on the team that can say that - senior Katelyn Panzau led the offense with 48 assists and five kills on just 15 swings. She is now fourth on the school's all-time list with 2,560 assists. She needs 211 more assists during the final couple of weeks to move into third place.

She also picked up her eighth double-double of the season, adding a team-leading 19 digs and even had seven aces, which tied Del Conte's season-high and was one behind her career high.

Sara Thomas picked up her ninth double-double of the season from 13 kills and 17 digs, while Jamie Adams added 17 more kills.

The freshmen are also putting up strong performances. Shayla Patrick had 10 kills and six blocks and Cara Hackmann had nine kills, seven blocks and 11 digs.

The most shocking thing of the match is the attendance at Charles Koch Arena. They brought out over 6,000 fans on a Friday night.

If Missouri State could somehow gain that kind of support, they could surely turn around a few games, especially against one of the conference's best in Creighton coming up at 7 p.m. this Friday at Hammons Student Center.
