Winter is just around the corner and Springfield is gearing up for the holidays.

On Nov. 17 the Urban District Alliance of Springfield will be kicking off their Festival of Lights, an event filled with activities for people of all ages.

The event will be based downtown, but other areas around town, such as Jordan Valley Park, Commercial Street and Walnut Street, will also be hosting activities. Snowflake decorations will be added along National Avenue as well.

There will also be the annual parade, family activities, free ice skating, the Creamery Arts Center grand opening, the Mayor's tree lighting and more.

As a bonus, the Springfield Cardinals will be hosting a fireworks show at 6:45 p.m. Saturday.

"We've been involved with the Festival of Lights for a couple of years now," Mike Lindskog, manager of public relations for the Cardinals said. "It's a great opportunity for us to help the city kick off the holiday season."

Lindskog said Santa and Louie the Mascot will be available for pictures at the Springfield Cardinals Team Store on Saturday night.

Additional information on times and events over the period of the Festival of Lights is listed on www.itsalldowntown.com
