Fictional character models actor's real life

Dan Snyder

Issue date: 11/27/07 Section: Features
"Danny Roane: First Time Director" was released on DVD earlier this month.

"The whole thing is based on my life," said Andy Dick, the film's director. "It's about an actor, like me, who has done office comedies, like me, who gets himself into a lot of trouble through drinking and drugs, like me, who's semi-blackballed and does a bunch of theater, like me."

This movie is a mockumentary on the film industry.

The fictional character, play-ed by Dick, is Danny Roane, who has a mediocre TV career that is ended by his abuse of alcohol. He then gets clean and tries to direct a movie.

"Danny Roane" has an all-star cast, including Anthony Rapp, James Van Der Beek, Jimmy Kimmel, Frankie Muniz, Ben Stiller and Mo Collins.

Dick has appeared in "Less than Perfect," "Old School," "Road Trip" and "Bongwater," along with many other appearances in television shows and movies.

"It's not really about the (movie) industry," Dick said. "It's more about a guy and his struggles with alcohol and drugs. Then about how he is trying to keep it together while trying to make a movie about drugs and alcohol."

"Then he tries to get back into the industry by making a movie, like me, but this is my movie "Danny Roane: First Time Director," and I'm making a movie about a guy trying to make a movie," Dick said.

Dick's long career in Hollywood has had many ups and downs.

In May 1997, Dick was arrested for driving under the influence and possession of cocaine and marijuana.

He has had many run-ins with police and troubles with drinking. Dick and Jon Lovitz, another comedian, were involved in a confrontation last July.

Lovitz reportedly grabbed Dick and slammed his head into a wall.

When asked about these past incidents Dick said, "All of those things have something to do with my bout with drinking, with alcoholism."

"Jon Lovitz and I, well, what happened was, I went to go see his show, which was harder to get through than 'Darjeeling Limited,'" Dick said. "After the show, I went to talk to him about a movie I was producing, and he grabbed me by the lapel and said, 'I'm not going to be in your movie and I'm not going to be in your life. That's the ticket.'"
