Horse-drawn carriage rides are being offered downtown on various days until mid-January for people who would like to be part of Springfield night-life or have a romantic evening, the owner of Shires For Hire said.

"We are horse enthusiasts," owner Shawn Jordan said. "We've been doing it for eight years."

The carriage leaves from the square, goes up to Jefferson Street then past Walnut Street and finally south to Ernie Biggs.

The carriage rides last about 15 minutes each, Jordan said.

"It is a romantic evening," Jordan said. "It has a night-life feel to it, like Kansas City."

However, unlike Kansas City, which can charge from $25 to $45 per person--in Springfield Shires For Hire charges $30 for a carriage load.

A carriage can hold up to six adults, and divided among all riders, it would cost $5 a person.

"That's as cheap as we can make it," Jordan said.

When the holidays come the business picks up and Jordan recommends making reservations.

Shires for Hire can be contacted at 417-868-4648 for reservations or questions about dates.
