Letter: Sports shouldn't get all the student support

Basketball, soccer, volleyball! Kudos to Andrew Giddens, who pointed out in last Tuesday's issue of The Standard that other activities do exist at our university aside from football. Although there was a referral to the CollegeBowl, no one has cared to mention the many other activities that Missouri State students can, and do participate in. The Beartones are a male A-Cappella group who compete nationally. And the support turnout for our orchestra and bands? Art shows at the Student exhibition center? I'm guessing that the student turnout at these performances and exhibits are a small fraction of what the sporting events bring. I have grown up in an artistic family, but it is still a family that values talent, whether it's with a paintbrush or a pigskin. We all aren't good at everything, but there are other people who appreciate and need support just as much as our schools athletes do. Instead of putting us to shame for our lack of interest in sports, try focusing on something else. There are a lot of musicians, artists, and scholars who would appreciate it greatly, and I¹d be one of them.

The vast number of fine arts events are free to students, if not to the public at large. The theater department is one of the few exceptions to this, as their meager COAL budget doesn't go very far towards paying the overhead for putting on a play or musical. (Continued…)
