Following an unprecedented offensive season that included a winning record for the first time in three years, the awards piled-in for the Missouri State football team this week.
Quarterback Cody Kirby was named Freshman of the Year and sophomore tight end Clay Harbor made the Gateway All-Conference first team, the league announced.
Kirby set Missouri State freshman records for most pass attempts (246), completions (149), passing yards (1,742) and passing touchdowns (11).
His eight touchdown runs were the most by a Bears quarterback since DeAndre Smith in 1990.
Kirby led a Missouri State offense that averaged 36.3 points per game, the highest in an 11-game season in school history.
It's the first time a Bears player has won Freshman of the Year in the nine-year history of the award.
After grabbing six catches for 73 yards and a touchdown his freshman season, Harbor exploded this fall and had 45 receptions for 647 yards and three touchdowns.
He had the most receptions and receiving yards ever by a tight end at Missouri State.
Kirby was also one of six Bears on the All-Newcomer team.
Joining him were redshirt freshman guard David Arkin, junior tackle Kevaughn Brown and running back Kingjack Washington.
Arkin was named Gateway Conference offensive lineman of the week twice and graded out as the Bears top blocker in eight of 11 weeks.
Washington was named to the All-Newcomer team despite not starting one game.
Defensive end Clayton Dickehut and safety Derek Miller also made the squad.
The six Bears on the All-Newcomer team were the most by any Gateway school.
Youngstown State and Northern Iowa were next with five each.
Youngstown State wide receiver Ferlando Williams is the Newcomer of the Year.
Arkin and senior punter Nathan Stokes were named to the all-conference second team.
Stokes also made honorable mention as a kicker, joining senior running back Gerald Davis, senior cornerback Marcus Colbert and junior safety Roger Wright.
Northern Iowa, who is still competing in the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs along with Southern Illinois, won the three main individual awards.
Quarterback Eric Sanders is the offensive player of the year, linebacker Brannon Carter is the defensive player of the year and coach Mark Farley is the coach of the year.
It's the first time in seven seasons that a Gateway team has swept those awards.
