Five games into the season, the Lady Bears find themselves 0-5 after a 63-59 home loss last night to the now 6-0 University of Texas at San Antonio.
"We're struggling with knowing how to win," head coach Nyla Milleson said.
The two teams were evenly matched on the stat sheet. Each team had 47 rebounds and six assists, and the field goal percentages were close with the Lady Bears shooting 36% and the Roadrunners shooting 30%. The most telling statistic was the number of free throws for each team.
"When you get outshot 25-10 from the foul line and they're in the one and one at the 13 minute mark, that's tough to overcome," Milleson said.
The Roadrunners shot 21-25 from the foul line while the Lady Bears made 7-10, a 14 point difference.
Junior guard Tiffany Coppage had the hot hand in the first half for the Lady Bears. She shot 3-5 from three. But San Antonio's Jordan Stark made a three pointer in each of the last two possessions for San Antonio to give the Roadrunners a 31-28 halftime lead. Excluding Coppage, the Lady Bears shot 1-13 in the game from three.
"They definitely brought me in as a shooter, so that's what I'm trying to do.
San Antonio clawed back from a six-point deficit in the first half thanks, in part, to a 5-1 advantage in steals.
"We were up six in the first half and then were down three at halftime," Milleson said. "We held them to 30% shooting. There are good things, but it's not showing up at this point."
The Lady Bears made several runs at the Roadrunners in the second half. Down 37-32, Jacque Griggs made a contested lay-up to pull within three. Then Senior Tiff Terwelp stole an errant pass and passed to Balerio who hit an open mid-range jump-shot on the fast break.
Down one, the Lady Bears committed three fouls in less than a minute, putting San Antonio in the bonus with 12:53 left in the game. In the ensuing possessions, UTSA built their lead up to 44-38 with 11 minutes to play.
