MSU takes flag football crown

Two teams win at regional tournament

Andrew Vorce

Issue date: 11/30/07 Section: Sports
For the first time in history, Missouri State has produced two teams that have won their regional flag football tournaments.

Now, those teams are on their way to the National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association's National Flag Football Tournament.

The tournament, which will be held at the University of Texas at Dallas on Jan. 3 through 5, will see both User Pick and Delta Zeta competing to win it all.

But it wasn't all fun and games, especially for Delta Zeta. In the first game blow out of SEMO, 68-0, and a second game victory of the Fast and Furious with a scoreline of 14-0, the women started to recognize they had some support from the crowd.

The most vivid of the fans were User Pick, but there was also another fan that the girls dubbed 'suit jacket.'

'Suit Jacket' was actually the coach of the Arkansas Angels team, who had been to every Delta Zeta game and scouted every play the women had come with.

The scouting payed off as the Angels turned into the only team able to defeat Delta Zeta. After scouting every play they had, they were able to crunch out a 25-24 defeat of Delta Zeta.

"We were so furious that the only way people feel that they could beat us is if they scout all of their plays," Whitney Paul of Delta Zeta said.

The night before the final day, User Pick helped the women create 15 new plays. With a rematch with SEMO as the semi-final game, Delta Zeta eventually won to a point difference that made the other team forfeit in a rain delay.

Paul thought her defense really helped spark their offense. "In the championship game, our defense really stepped up only allowing one first down the entire game," Paul said.

User Pick, who also had their championship game at the same time, came late to the Delta Zeta game announcing their victory over John Brown University and helped cheer the girls on to their eventual 19-0 victory to put them through to Nationals.

"We had the ball inside the 20 and saw our boys come over saying they won, so why not," Paul said. "We put another seven on the board for them and won the game."
