Missouri State's College of Business Administration announced Jan. 14 that it was recently re-accredited by the Board of Directors of the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business-International.

COBA was originally accredited in 1992 in business and accounting and re-accredited for the first time in 1997, COBA Dean Ronald Bottin said. AASCB re-accreditation is done every five years, he said.

"Re-accreditation is an extensive review process of the college done by a team of business school deans and educators," Bottin said. "The board looks for a variety of things, with the quality of faculty at the core."

There are three main areas the board looks for, including faculty credentials, assessment of learning standards and goals and a strategic plan for the next five years, he said.

The AASCB cited COBA's assessment of learning practices to be a "best practice" that could serve as a model for other business schools, Bottin said.

COBA students reap many benefits from their school being accredited, Bottin said. These benefits include graduate school opportunities and job recruitment.

"Many job recruiters only go to accredited schools when looking for future employees," Bottin said. "Also, accreditation means COBA students can compete with anyone for jobs after graduating."

The college itself also gains benefits from being accredited, including being part of a nationally recognized program and receiving validation for hard work, he said.

However, Bottin said, "accreditation should only be a byproduct of having a good program." The requirements for accreditation are things that should be done in order to have a quality program.

Missouri State is among 169 other business programs worldwide that have achieved this level of accreditation from AASCB, according to the AASCB Web site. Other universities close to Missouri State that have reached this level include the University of Missouri-Columbia and the University of Central Arkansas, Bottin said.

Bottin said COBA is the largest AASCB-accredited program in Missouri, as well as in the surrounding six-state region, with approximately 4,600 students enrolled.
