Letter: Students should think about what they read
Issue date: 1/18/08 Section: Opinion
I would like to point out one flaw in the "Vote with Violence" idea that Mr. Faegre is promoting.
In the guest column, he promoted using violence as a way to change the political system, yet was against the war in Iraq.
IT'S THE SAME IDEA.
The American govt. was willing to sacrafice armed volunteer soldiers in order to make a political change in Iraq. The govt. is currently staying in Iraq to settle the place down.
When did it become a forgone conclusion that the war in Iraq was a bad thing? I'm not sticking up for either side of this debate, mind you, I would just like to point out that Mr. Faegre, nor The Standard's editorial board, have rigoursly investigated this affair.
Mr. Faegre prints that 50,000 to 100,000 civilians have been killed in Iraq but he neglects to mention a source.
The Standard's "Our View" edition claims that the death toll is staggeringly high.
Staggeringly high ... compared to what?
All I am asking is that the folks reading this come to their own conclusion about issues and stop taking everything that other people say at face value.
Like Aretha Franklin said in Blues Brothers ... you better think!

Phillip,
It will likely come as no surprise that I do not agree that the war in Iraq and Mr. Culbertson-Faegre's protest are identical. Before addressing your letter, and I will, I'd like to ask a question of my own:
You ask "staggeringly high compared to what?" Personally, I would say that one death for an unjust cause, for a lie, is far too much - that would be my own basis for comparison. (Continued…)

::edit::
In my above letter, the aside when talking about the 36% of the electorate that claims to follow the most peaceful religion on the planet should have included an indication that they follow it in the fundamentalist sense, since 87% of our population claims to be Christian. (Continued…)

I could not have penned a better reply than Mr. Eberhard's comment. Frankly, his ability to craft philosophical arguments impresses me.
I'd like to state that the questions and answers that he provides are mirrored by my own. (Continued…)

Gentilement, behold at what we have created. A debate about the war in
which no one's name was drug through the mud, no profanity was muttered,
and relativly good grammar was used throughout. (Continued…)

Of course there is a time and a place to change ones government as put forth in the declaration of independance. Let us review that document in light of the current administration. (Continued…)

Phillip,
Forgive me, but I couldn't help but notice this quote:
"The Iraqi people were morally obligated to rebel the moment they were thrown into a despotic government. (Continued…)

Phillip,
You do not have every freedom you had before 9/11. Here is a rundown of many of them. Pack a lunch, it's a very long read.
