An attempted rape on Missouri State University campus is under investigation, according to a release by Springfield Police Department.

According to the release, a female MSU employee reported to 911 at 10:39 a.m. she was assaulted by a white male suspect in the women’s bathroom of Cheek Hall on May 23.

The victim struggled with the suspect and escaped, running out of Cheek Hall and calling the police, the release said. The suspect left Cheek Hall and was apprehended and detained by Missouri State Campus Safety Officers.

The suspect was arrested when Springfield Police officers arrived. He was identified as Gregory E. Morton Jr., 32, and is a previously registered sex offender.

The Greene County Prosecutor’s Office filed charges of first-degree burglary, unlawful use of a weapon and first-degree attempted rape with no bond.
