The men’s Soccer Bears remain undefeated at home after defeating Eastern Illinois 2-0 on Sept. 15.
The Bears were aggressive from the start, scoring a goal in the 13th minute in the first half following a penalty kick from senior midfielder Nicolo Mulatero after a foul on sophomore forward Jesus Barea.
Mulatero was the leading scorer for the Bears in the 2020-2021 season, and currently has 4 total points with 2 goals.
Eastern Illinois was shutout from the start, attempting only 4 shots compared to Missouri State's 13.
The Bears continued to show aggression and controlled the pace of the game going into the second half, scoring a goal in the 79th minute from sophomore forward Simon Pedersen on an assist from senior forward/midfielder Josh Dolling and senior forward Aadne Bruseth.
“Our approach was to keep attacking, whatever the score was,” Pedersen said. “Up at halftime we decided to keep attacking because for our team attack is almost the best defense.”
Two players earned Missouri Valley Conference player of the week honors due in part to their performances in the game.. Junior forward Jon Koka was named player of the week, and senior defender Kyle Hiebert was named Defensive Player of the week.
“We always have to make sure we stay humble and make sure we take care of the simple things,” assistant coach Phil Woods said.
The Bears will travel to Edwardsville on Sept. 25 to face SIU Edwardsville at 5:30 p.m. in the first game on their Missouri Valley Conference schedule.
